Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa and MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) are poised to celebrate African music, creativity and achievement at the fifth MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), which holds at Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa on Saturday, July 18.
The announcement, which was made simultaneously in South Africa and Nigeria, had top celebrities in attendance and the theme for this year’s event is Evolution. The awards will recognize and reward musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African youth culture over the last 12 months.
Commenting, Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa said: “We are thrilled that the MTV Africa Music Awards will be returning to Durban and KwaZulu-Natal on 18 July, a date famous for being the birthday of Nelson Mandela. What better day could there be for staging this inspirational celebration of African achievement and creativity that showcases Africa’s best talent on the world stage.”
Notable guests present at the unveiling included MI, Audu Maikori, Steve Babaeko, Seyi Shay, Iyanya, Naeto C, Yemi Alade, Praiz, Kiss Daniel, Shaydee, Jesse Jagz and DJ Xclusive among a host of others.
Among others, the ceremony will celebrate African talent across 17 award categories and will also feature special categories for Best Lusophone and Best Francophone acts as well as Artist of the Decade, MAMA Leadership Award and Personality of the Year. The nominations for the awards will be revealed on June 11.
